Love as an Expansion of Self

In this lecture, Noa Lahav Ayalon makes the case that love is the single most important thread that runs through all of Spinoza's Ethics. Beginning with Spinoza's definitions of love and hate, she shows how love functions as an expansion of the self, shaping our experience of beauty and our connection to others. The lecture moves through the darker dimensions of love, including possessiveness and jealousy, before turning to Spinoza's vision of rational love as friendship and nobility. Ayalon explains how hate can be overcome by love, and why that transformed love is even stronger than love that was never tested. She traces the stages of knowledge through which love develops, from imagination to reason, culminating in the intellectual love of God. This final form of love is not an escape from life but an immanent salvation: a peace of mind found within the reality of our lives themselves.
