Work with Ergo

Open roles

Social Media & Community Manager

Remote (NYC preferred) 3-Month Freelance Contract, with potential to convert to Part-Time or Full-Time

About Ergo

Ergo is a nonprofit that publishes long-form philosophical lecture courses with leading scholars, freely available, without ads or paywalls. We define philosophy broadly, covering thinkers from the ancient world to the present alongside big-picture questions across the arts and sciences. Our team brings together backgrounds in philosophy, film, journalism, and technology.

The Role

We're looking for a Social Media & Community Manager to own Ergo's presence across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, and YouTube. You'll build and execute the content strategy that grows our audience, deepens engagement with our community, and drives conversion into our longer-form content: Substack essays, full lectures, and courses on our website and YouTube channel.

This is a builder's role: you'll shape not just what gets posted, but which platforms are worth Ergo's focus and why. This role is remote-friendly, but we'd prefer someone based in or near NYC who can be on set for behind-the-scenes content when our scholars are filming. However, we will consider a fully remote arrangement for the right candidate.

We're starting this engagement as a 3-month freelance contract, with the intention of converting to a part-time or full-time role based on fit and impact.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and execute a multi-platform content strategy across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, Substack, and YouTube, tailored to each platform's audience and format
  • Plan, create, and publish creative content, including reels, shorts, carousels, quote cards, and community posts, that reflects Ergo's brand voice and academic credibility
  • Capture behind-the-scenes content on set during scholar shoots (NYC-based candidates)
  • Grow each platform through consistent posting, authentic community engagement, and responsive interaction, including actively engaging in comments in a way that reflects real familiarity with the ideas being discussed
  • Drive traffic and conversion from social into Ergo's long-form video content on YouTube and Ergo.org
  • Track and report performance metrics regularly, translating data into clear takeaways on what's working and why
  • Identify and recommend which platforms deserve the most investment based on performance and conversion data
  • Stay ahead of platform trends, formats, and best practices, and pressure-test our creative approach against them
  • Collaborate with the production and marketing team to align social content with course launches and the broader content calendar
  • Maintain a repeatable system for asset creation, scheduling, and reporting

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience managing social media for a brand, content creator, media company, or content-driven organization
  • A proven track record of growing engaged audiences across multiple platforms, ideally including Instagram and YouTube
  • Strong copywriting and content instincts: you know how to make an idea scroll-stopping without dumbing it down
  • Comfort with analytics and reporting; you can read the numbers and turn them into a recommendation, not just a recap
  • Experience driving social traffic toward a conversion goal (newsletter signups, subscriptions, or similar)
  • A philosophy degree isn't required, but genuine personal interest in and exposure to philosophy is important, enough to engage thoughtfully in comments and speak credibly to the ideas
  • Background knowledge of the topics we cover (ancient to contemporary philosophy, philosophy of science, etc.) is very helpful
  • Video editing or basic content creation skills (CapCut, Premiere, or similar) are a nice-to-have, as you won't be editing alone since a freelance marketing editor supports clip production
  • Self-directed and comfortable owning a function end-to-end in a small, fast-moving team
